Privacy Policy — WhereInClipHistory

1. Our Privacy Commitment

WhereInClipHistory is a clipboard-history utility that runs entirely on your Mac. We built it privacy-first: everything you copy stays on your machine, full stop. The only thing the app ever transmits is a handful of anonymous usage statistics (for example “the app was launched”) so we can tell whether the app is working and which features matter — never the contents of your clipboard, and never anything that identifies you.

2. Information We Do NOT Collect

  • ❌ The contents of your clipboard or clipboard history
  • ❌ Personal information (name, email, contacts)
  • ❌ Accounts, sign-ins, or email addresses
  • ❌ Device identifiers or advertising IDs
  • ❌ Location data
  • ❌ Crash dumps containing your data

The only data transmitted is the anonymous usage events described in section 6 — they contain no clipboard content and no identifiers.

3. Data That Stays on Your Device

DataWhere it livesLifetime
Session clipboard history (text you copy)In the app’s memory onlyUntil you quit the app or click Clear all
Pinned clipsA local JSON file inside the app’s sandbox containerUntil you unpin or delete them
The app’s small settingsThe app’s sandbox containerUntil you delete the app

WhereInClipHistory records text only. Images, files, and any other clipboard content are ignored and never stored.

4. Permissions We Request

Clipboard access (Required)

Recording what you copy is the app’s entire purpose. The app checks the system clipboard for changes and stores new text entries in your local history.

Important details about clipboard access:

  • The clipboard is read only on your Mac; contents are never transmitted.
  • Only plain text is read — other formats are skipped.
  • If macOS asks whether the app may access the pasteboard, choosing “Allow Always” enables normal operation; you can change this anytime in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

The app requests no other permissions — no Accessibility, no microphone, no files, no network.

5. How Your Data Flows

[Text you copy ⌘C] → [macOS clipboard] → [WhereInClipHistory on your Mac]

                              [In-memory session history]
                                              ↓ (only if you pin)
[Local file in the app's container]

[Anonymous event, e.g. "panel_opened"] → [Aptabase EU server]
(event name + app/OS version + locale — never clipboard content)

Your clipboard data has no arrow leaving your Mac. That’s the design.

6. Third-Party Services

WhereInClipHistory uses one third-party service:

Aptabase (EU-hosted, privacy-first analytics). When you use the app, it sends a small anonymous event for actions like launching the app, opening the history panel, or pinning a clip. Each event contains only:

  • the event name (e.g. panel_opened)
  • app version, macOS version, device model (e.g. “Mac16,1”), and locale
  • a random session number that resets every hour and is not tied to you

Events never include clipboard contents, file names, or any personal identifier. Aptabase is designed for anonymous, GDPR-friendly analytics and stores this data in the EU — see their policy at https://aptabase.com/legal/privacy.

There are no other services: no advertising, no crash-reporting SDKs, no tracking.

7. Data Retention and Deletion

  • Session history disappears when you quit the app (or click Clear all).
  • Pinned clips persist until you unpin or delete them in the app.
  • Complete removal: delete the app and its container folder (~/Library/Containers/net.dataconsultingservices.WhereInClipHistory/) — nothing else exists anywhere.

8. iCloud and Backups

WhereInClipHistory does not use iCloud and does not sync anything. If you use Time Machine or another backup tool, your pinned-clips file may be included in your own device backups, under your control like any local file.

9. Children’s Privacy

WhereInClipHistory does not collect data from anyone, including children under 13. The app contains no accounts, no chat, no ads, and no purchases beyond the App Store transaction itself.

10. Security

  • The app runs inside the macOS App Sandbox.
  • Your history never leaves the sandbox container on your Mac.
  • The only network traffic is the anonymous analytics events described in section 6, sent over HTTPS to EU servers; your clipboard data is never on any server.
  • Tip: clipboard managers remember what you copy; avoid copying passwords in plain text, or clear the history after doing so. (Most password managers mark their copies as concealed; a future version will skip those automatically.)

11. Changes to This Policy

If a future version changes what the app does with data (for example, optional anonymous usage statistics), we will update this policy, change the “last updated” date, and describe the change in the App Store release notes before the new version ships.

12. Your Rights

Because we hold no data about you, requests for access, correction, portability, or deletion (GDPR/CCPA) are satisfied by design: your data is on your device, readable by you, and deletable by you at any time. You can still contact us with any privacy question (section 13).
